Out of Africa

Out of Africa Special Publication

Associated with the "Out of Africa" conference, held in November 2009 in Johannesburg, South Africa, we solicit contributions for a Special Publication covering the broad topic of African Geology and Geophysics, in honour of Kevin Burke and Lewis Ashwal.

The African continent has inspired Earth Scientists who study the Earth's evolution from the early Archean formation of continents to the modern geomorphology, and from the core-mantle boundary to the Earth's surface. We invite original papers and reviews that cover the evolution of Africa in space and time, and its relation and communication with the underlying upper and lower mantle.

Subjects may include, but are not limited to:

  • Africa through time: plate reconstructions and palaeogeography
  • Pan-African assembly and magmatic and orogenic processes
  • Formation (and destruction) of cratonic areas
  • Large Igneous Provinces and layered intrusions
  • Plumes and hotspots
  • The origin of anorthosites
  • African and peri-African meteorites and impact craters
  • Geochronology and the tempo of evolution
  • The passive margins of Africa
  • Microcontinent formation
  • Intracontinental rifts
  • Formation and evolution of sedimentary basins
  • Africa's (palaeo) topography
  • Subduction along Africa's northern margin
  • Imaging the African crust and mantle
  • African petroleum and mineral resources
  • History of African Science

We envisage publication in the Special Publications of the Geological Society of London series. Papers in this series are listed in citation counters such as Scopus and the ISI Conference Proceedings Citation Index, and their citation data can now be accessed through Web of Science and are included in an author's H Index. There were nearly a million accesses of the online abstracts of SP papers last year, and over 300,000 downloads of full papers.
