Out of Africa:
140 years with Kevin Burke and Lew Ashwal

15 to 18 November 2009 at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg

The greatest scientific birthday meeting of all times celebrated Kevin Burke (80) and Lewis Ashwal (60)! Both lost their hearts to African geology, Kevin originally through his early research positions in Ghana and Nigeria, a great many decades ago, while Lewis left the 'Bronx' and moved permanently to South Africa nearly 20 years ago. They have remained friends and colleagues since the Lunar and Planetary Institute days in the 1980s, they still work and speak to each other, and both have enjoyed great scientific success in diverse scientific fields.

The 'Out of Africa' conference highlighted a broad range of Earth Science investigations of the African continent and its margins, linked to the work of Kevin and Lew. The meeting was a great success with over 90 participants, 37 oral contributions and more than 20 poster presentations. We hope that new collaborations will come out of this event!

We solicit contributions for a Special Publication covering the broad topic of African Geology and Geophysics, in honour of Kevin Burke and Lewis Ashwal. Please consider contributing a manuscript!
